2012 Summer Games Venues
 

The 2012 Summer Games will use a mixture of new venues, existing and historic facilities, and temporary facilities, some of them in well-known locations such as Hyde Park and Horse Guards Parade.

The majority of venues have been divided into three zones within Greater London:
the Olympic Park, the River Zone and the Central Zone.

In addition to these are venues outside London, such as the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire (Canoe Slalom), Weymouth and Portland (Sailing) and Football stadiums in co-Host cities around the UK.

Olympic Park

The 2.5 square Olympic Park will be seven minutes by Javelin train from central London.
The Park will contain:

  • The Olympic Stadium, which will host the track and field athletics events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies with a planned capacity of 80,000.
     
  • The Aquatics Centre, which will host diving, swimming, synchronised swimming and will have a spectator capacity of 17,500.
     
  • Water Polo Arena
     
  • The 6,000 seat Velodrome for Track Cycling and the BMX Circuit alongside.
     
  • The Hockey Centre, with a 16,000-capacity main competition pitch and warm-up pitch alongside.
     
  • Two indoor arenas:
    Basketball Arena - 12,000 capacity for basketball and the later stages of the Handball competitions.
    Handball Arena - 6,000-7,000 capacity for the preliminary rounds and quarter-finals, the Fencing discipline of Modern Pentathlon and the Paralympic sport of Goalball.
     
  • The Athletes' Village, with accommodation for all athletes and team officials (some 17,320 beds in total).
  • After the Games the Village will leave a legacy of new homes and community facilities as the first phase of a wider redevelopment of the Olympic Park.
  • International Boradcast Centre and main Press Centre.
  • Eton Manor: the venue for Wheelchair Tennis during the Paralympic Games and a training venue for Aquatics competitors.

River Zone

The River Zone includes four venues straddling the River Thames:

  • ExCeL for Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting. Separate arenas will be used during the Olympic Games and Boccia, Paralympic Table Tennis, Paralympic Judo, Paralympic Powerlifting, Volleyball (sitting) and Wheelchair Fencing during the Paralympic Games.
     
  • North Greenwich Arena, otherwise known as the O2, for Artistic and Trampoline Gymnastics and the Basketball finals.
     
  • Greenwich Park, for equestrian and elements of Modern Pentathlon.
     
  • The Royal Artillery Barracks, for shooting.

Central Zone

The Central Zone comprises a number of venues across London:

  • Wimbledon will be the venue for Tennis.
     
  • Wembley Stadium for Football.
     
  • Wembley Arena for Badminton and Rhythmic Gymnastics.
     
  • Lord's Cricket Ground for archery.
     
  • Horse Guards Parade for Beach Volleyball.
     
  • Hyde Park for Triathlon and Marathon swimming.
     
  • Earls Court for the Volleyball.

Out of London venues

  • Lee Valley White Water Centre, Hertfordshire, for Canoe Slalom.
     
  • Eton Dorney, Berkshire, for Rowing and Canoe Sprint.
     
  • Hadleigh Farm, Essex, for Mountain Bike.
     
  • Weymouth and Portland, in Dorset on the souith coast of England, for Sailing.

Football stadia

The Football competition will be staged at existing and world-class stadiums.

  • Hampden Park in Glasgow
     
  • Millennium Stadium in Cardiff
     
  • Old Trafford in Manchester
     
  • St James' Park in Newcastle
     
  • City of Coventry Stadium in Coventry
