Hotel of the Month: United Kingdom
Gleneagles Hotel and Spa
There are many places in the UK, or in the world for that matter, that offer so much in just one resort: a fantastic hotel, award winning Michelin starred restaurants, stunning championship golf courses, a spa to die for and more entertainment for kids than they could possibly ask for. Gleneagles offers all of the above and more, it really is in our eyes a world class resort for couples, families and groups alike.
The hotel itself is easy to get to, around an hour's drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh airport. It is perfect for a weekend bolthole or for a more relaxing longer stay. The 232 bedrooms are well appointed and all have their own distinctive, individual features; they are warm and homely yet have a modern feel and the bathrooms are the height of luxury. These are rooms you would not want to leave, but then there is so much to tempt you out of your room it is difficult to know where to start!
Food is always top of many people's lists. The choices within the hotel are fantastic; you might choose to sample any of the 5 restaurants. Equally, although the hotel is a little isolated, you can easily catch a taxi to a local town to dine there. The hotel restaurants range from the relaxed, well priced Dormy Clubhouse, right up to the pricey but 2 Michelin starred Andrew Fairlie Restaurant, which you will need to book in advance. Breakfast is sumptuous, the most glorious buffet you could ever imagine: unbelievable local smoked salmon, slow roasted ham, champagne, à la carte dishes...you could spend all day there!
Once you have filled up on a hearty breakfast, it is time to make a choice on what to do with your day. The three championship golf courses are where most head. To play 18 holes that have troubled the finest the game has produced is always a challenge for the amateur golfer and these courses won't let you down. The Kings was our favourite, the stunning scenery makes it an unforgettable experience.
Aside from the golf you can simply go for a walk or a jog around the grounds - the hotel is set on 850 acres of Perthshire countryside so there's plenty to see.Inside the hotel, the Spa by ESPA has been a regular winner in the Condé Nast Readers' poll for the best spa in the UK, which speaks for itself. If it is within your budget, you simply have to have a treatment. For the youngsters, there is plenty to do as well: an excellent pool area, the "playroom" and the "zone" offer some great entertainment for the kids, plenty to keep them quiet, or not, whatever the case may be!
This is a resort for the whole family, an exceptional treat. Seasoned travellers and occasional travellers alike will find plenty of thrills and surprises that will keep you going back for years to come.
