AUSTRALIA
Sydney | Blue Mountains | Lord Howe Island | Byron Bay
New South Wales
Europeans began to encroach on Australia in the 16th century: Portuguese navigators were followed by Dutch explorers and the enterprising English pirate William Dampier. Captain James Cook sailed the entire length of the eastern coast in 1770, stopping at Botany Bay on the way. After rounding Cape York, he claimed the continent for the British and named it New South Wales.
Sydney
Sydney is Australia's oldest city, the economic powerhouse of the nation and the country's capital in everything but name. It's blessed with sun-drenched natural attractions, dizzy skyscrapers, delicious and daring restaurants, superb shopping and friendly folk.
Sydney Harbour's sandstone headlands, dramatic cliffs and stunning beaches define the city. But whichever way you look, from the white sails of the harbour to the arc of The Coathanger to the toned flesh on Bondi, Sydney is serious eye-candy.

With its numerous beaches, unspoilt hinterland, and relaxed lifestyle, Byron Bay is a popular tourist destination. The original inhabitants of Byron Bay called it "Cavanbah" which was the local Aborigines name for meeting place. Today people from all over the world come to Byron Bay to meet and enjoy the subtropical climate, the breathtaking natural beauty, and the diverse mix of visitors and residents from millionaires to mystics, surfers and alternative lifestylers.

The area offers a year round tropical paradise of beaches and rainforests with the average temperature in summer of 27 degrees and 22 degrees in winter. When visiting this region all roads lead to the township of Byron Bay which is dominated by the Cape Byron Lighthouse. By night the lighthouse is Australia's most powerful beacon, by day the backdrop for hang gliders which soar in the thermals off the Cape. Those who prefer more down to earth explorations can meander along the world famous Cape Byron Walking track and watch dolphins waltz in the waves below or play with the surfers in the waves at Wategos Beach. Not to be outdone by the Dolphins those giants of the deep, the Humpback Whales can be seen breaching and playing off the waters off the Cape as they migrate north in July/August and return in September/October.
Byron Bay is located just off the Pacific Highway, 800kms north of Sydney, 175kms south of Brisbane. Airports are located in Ballina (30mins south) or Coolangatta (60mins north) and busses and trains arrive regularly.
