Victoria

Victoria has a wealth of activities and attractions. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure, a romantic getaway or designer labels, the state has something for everyone. Sandy beaches, snow-peaked mountains, zoos and aquariums, historic sites, bars and cafes, white-water rafting, spas, wildlife and wineries, or self-driving along Victoria’s breathtaking coast; everywhere you turn there’s always something special to see and do. Better still, Victoria’s compact size means activities and attractions are all within easy reach of each other.

Melbourne

Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city itself, laid out in a large rectangle and boasting a lively and cosmopolitan pulse, sits on the northern banks of the Yarra River, about five kilometres from the bay.

One glance at a map and it’s obvious that Melbourne is a planned city: a tidy, balanced grid of neatly angled streets. But beneath this sense of everything in its place restraint lies a restless creative energy constantly pushing back at the city’s seeming conservatism. The CBD is made up of precincts; distinct enclaves each with its own flavour and charm. Some are just a lane or two, while others cover the banks of the Yarra River or a busy CBD street.

Extending around the bay are a number of inner suburbs, each with its own distinct character and personality. A short tram ride from the city centre, Melbourne’s suburban neighbourhoods are a must see for anyone wanting to experience what life here is really all about.

Great Ocean Road

Take time out to enjoy this spectacular stretch of coast. Watch the tides change, breathe in the fresh ocean air, and uncover the history of shipwrecks, lighthouses and maritime villages, or head inland to waterfalls and rainforest. You will find limitless opportunities to leave everyday life behind.  Winding along the western coast of Victoria, the Great Ocean Road offers stunning ocean views, beachside activities, laidback coastal towns and maritime villages. You will find limitless opportunities to leave everyday life behind.

The Twelve Apostles are the remnants from constant erosion of the limestone cliffs of the mainland that began 10-20 million years ago. The stormy Southern Ocean and blasting winds gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs. The caves eventually became arches and when they collapsed rock stacks up to 45 metres high were left isolated from the shore. Sunrise and sunset offer particularly impressive views as the Twelve Apostles change colour from dark and foreboding in shadow to brilliant sandy yellow under a full sun.

Philip Island

Just 26 kilometres long and 9 kilometres wide, Phillip Island is a short stretch of land just over an hour south-east of Melbourne. Accessible by passenger ferry from Crib Point or by bridge from San Remo, Phillip Island is a popular holiday destination for Melburnians. The rugged southern coastline of the Island faces Bass Strait and offers some of the best surf beaches in Victoria, while the protected northern beaches nestle into Westernport Bay and provide excellent areas for swimming, sailing, boating and fishing. Cowes, on the bay side, is the largest township on the Island and offers a lively range of restaurants, shops and family attractions. Often described as Victoria’s natural attraction, Phillip Island has an abundance of wildlife including the ever-popular colony of Little Penguins, koala and fur seal colonies.
