Guilin has always been famous in China for its scenery and has been eulogised in innumerable literary works, paintings and inscriptions, over the centuries it has become known as the most beautiful spot in China. It covers an area of 4,195 square kilometres and has a population of 1.25 million.
Its name means "forest of Sweet Osmanthus", owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city. Its scenery is reputed by many Chinese to be the "finest under heaven".
The major tourists attractions are:
Li River cruise is among the most memorable of China’s excursions. The 45 mile journey to Yangshuo glides through a landscape of the natural beauty including mist shrouded craggs and bamboo groves which inspired painters and poets for many centuries. The river is a perfect complement to the peaks which are identified by fanciful names such as 'Painting Brush Hill’, 'Five Tigers Catch a Goat Hill’, 'Looking for Husband Rock’ or 'Nine Oxen Hill’. One of the most fascinating sights, in the evening, is the cormorant fisherman using their long bamboo rafts working with big diving birds.
One of the most extraordinary sights Guilin has to offer is the limestone underground Reed Flute Cave with its multi-coloured lighting and fantastic stalactites and stalagmites.
The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside it, with which people make flutes. Illuminated by coloured lighting, the fantastic spectacle is found in many variations along this 240 metre-long cave.
Tourists enter the cave and then take a U-shaped sight-seeing route to see different spots, whereupon they exit it from another cave quite near the entrance one. One trip lasts about an hour.
This Hill on the bank of the Li River resembles an elephant dipping its snout into the river.
Surrounded by 18 peaks, Yangshuo is like a blooming lotus flower. The nature and rural scenery in this small mountain town is reputed to be Guilin’s best.
Fubo Hill slopes into the Li River in the east and looms over the ground in the west. Waves run back wherever they meet the rocks thus it gets the name.
Longsheng is located in the mountainous region in the northeastern part of Guilin. It is attractive for its natural beauty and the colourful ethnic Chinese cultures and customs.
