BARCELONA

Transport:

The best mode of transport is to hire a car, which gives you flexibility to get to the circuit, the city and airport easily, plus any local attractions you may wish to visit.

Hints and tips on driving in Barcelona:

You should remember to carry your driving licence and valid insurance documents with you at all times in case you are stopped by the police. Also, you are also required to carry in the car a reflective vest, two warning triangles, a set of spare bulbs and a spare wheel.

Spain has a higher accident rate than the UK, probably a least partly due to a combination of poor road signage, narrow lanes in cities and roads converging and diverging from all sides. Many of the roads around Barcelona are now equipped with cameras, so you should watch your speed in these areas to avoid being fined.

Travelling outside the city:

Car hire really comes into its own when visiting locations outside the city, such as the monastery at Montserrat or the beach resorts south of Barcelona. Although they can be visited using public transport, there are several disadvantages, making Barcelona car hire a much more attractive option; trains into Barcelona can finish as early as 21:30, meaning you lose the flexibility to travel when and where you want, and conditions can be hot and cramped, particularly in the summer.

The Metro:

The metro is probably the swiftest and easiest way to get around inner areas, and buses or suburban trains to get a little further out. Buses service the airport and can get you into town pretty efficiently.

The metro is the easiest way to get around most of the city. You may need buses or suburban trains to reach some places. Barri Gòtic and surrounding areas are ideal for walking, but you'll probably need to use public transport to reach further-flung sites like La Sagrada Família and Parc Güell more efficiently.

Getting There:

Both British Airways and Iberia fly directly to Barcelona with regular daily schedules. El Prat Airport is located six miles (10 km) south of Barcelona and is connected to the city centre by various means:

There's a RENFE train (line ) every 30 minutes to Sants Station and Plaça de Catalunya (both central Barcelona) from 6:11 A.M. to 11:15 P.M. Follow the illustrated signs to the airport train station. Fare is about 300 Ptas (€ 1.80) and travel time is about 15 minutes. The trains are air conditioned and have plenty of luggage space.
