Shanghai Circus World:
The recently opened Shanghai Circus World is a 30,000-square-metre (323,000-square-foot) entertainment centre that is home to giant circus extravaganzas as well as the famous Shanghai acrobatic and magic shows.
The complex also includes a gigantic animal house with rooms for elephants, tigers, lions, chimps, horses, and pandas. The celebrated Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe stages its 20-act performances here on a regular basis. This has been the venue for the annual Shà nghai International Magic Festival and Competition, held in early November.
Xintiandi Entertainment Complex:
Xintiandi is a unique entertainment and cultural complex, developed in 2000. Preserving the traditional Shikumen-style architecture of Shanghai, it offers a variety of restaurants, bars, boutiques and galleries.
Shopping:
Nanjing Road & Pedestrian Mall:
Nanjing Road, a premier shopping destination and business area in downtown Puxi, Shanghai, since the last century. It features local stores and mega malls selling a wide range of quality brand merchandise.
The new pedestrian mall from Jing An district to the Bund adds another dimension to the shopping experience. The first phase is a shopping street open only to pedestrians. Urban public facilities have been built at the northern part of the mall, and a route has been designed for tour buses and for emergency use. Green areas have been added and shops along the section have been readjusted to better serve visitors
Huaihai Road:
Tree-lined Huaihai Road, which runs parallel to Nanjing Road, is considered a fashionable, upscale shopping, business and entertainment district. Formerly the French Concession, it abounds in fashion boutiques and shopping malls selling premium foreign labels and popular local brand names. Nearby is Xintiandi Entertainment Complex, providing a large selection of restaurants and clubs.
Xiangyang Flea Market:
Designer copies and Chinese souvenirs abound at the Xiangyang Road market. Dozens of stalls offer purses, scarves, Chinese silks and other garment and accessory items. Prices are not marked and bargaining is a must.
The Bund:
This famous district can be found on the bank of the Huangpu river, facing Pudong, in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The Bund has dozens of historical European colonial buildings, lining along the Huangpu river, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from Britain, France, USA, Russia, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain. The Bund lies north of the old, walled town of Shanghai. It began as a British settlement. A building boom at the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century led to the Bund becoming a major financial hub of East Asia.
Stretching 1.5 kilometres, The Bund houses 52 buildings of various architectural styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical, and Art Deco (Shanghai has one of the richest collections of Art Deco Architectures in the world). The Bund has often been called The Museum of International Architectures.
Some of the most important landmark buildings in The Bund are the Peace Hotel, the HSBC Building and the Customs Building. The Peace Hotel (formerly Cathay Hotel), also known as the Sassoon Building, was built by Sir Victor Sassoon. It was, and still is today, famous for its jazz band in its cafe. The top floor originally housed Sassoon's private apartment.
At the northern end of The Bund lies the Monument to the People's Heroes in Shanghai, which is a memorial for the those who died during the revolutionary struggle of Shanghai dating back to the Opium Wars.
Shanghai Museum:
Designed by a local architect, the new museum building is designed in the shape of an ancient, bronze, tripod cooking vessel called a ding. It is said that the inspiration for the design was specifically provided by the Da Ke Ding, now on exhibit in themuseum. The building has round top and a square base, symbolising the ancient Chinese perception of the world as "round sky, square earth".
The museum has a collection of over 120,000 pieces, including bronze, ceramics, calligraphy, furniture, jades, numismatics, paintings, seals, sculptures, minority art and foreign art. It has eleven galleries and three special temporary exhibition halls.
St. Ignatius Cathedral of Shanghai:
It is also referred to as Xujiahui Cathedral and is a Roman Catholic cathedral, located on Puxi Road, in Xujiahui, Shanghai. Built in 1906, it is noted as the Number one catholic cathedral in the Far East. It can accommodate 2,500 worshippers at the same time. The cathedral was featured in the opening scenes of Steven Spielberg's 1987 film Empire of the Sun.
Shangahi Grand Theatre:
The Theatre is located at the intersection of Central Boulevard and Huangpi Road South in northern part of the People's Square in Huangpu District.
The building was designed by French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier. Since its opening on August 27, 1998 the Shanghai Grand Theatre has successfully staged such shows and evenings as operas, musicals, ballets, symphonies, chamber music concerts, spoken drama and the Chinese operas. It also has a high reputation both at home and abroad as many high officials and VIPs, both domestic and international, gave the highest praises of the theatre for its perfect combination of art and architecture after they visited the theatre. Now it has become an important window of cultural exchange between China and the world and a bridge of artistic communication.
Shangahi Concert Hall:
Built in 1930 as a cinema, the Shanghai Concert Hall was transformed to a concert venue and given its present name in 1959. After a two-year renovation, the building, which was moved 66 metres (216 feet) southeast from its original location, was reopened in October of 2004, amidst great fanfare. Decorated with marble pillars and Roman chandeliers, it retains its classical European-style architecture. The new hall's capacity has been increased fourfold, to 1,200 seats. World-famous foreign and Chinese musicians will be invited to perform here.
Nightlife:
In bygone eras Shanghai had the unenviable reputation as the "whore of Asia", with a night life that rivalled that of Paris. After the Communists came to power the city was duly cleaned up, and today night clubs and bars abound, with Jazz, live music, classical concerts and dance all on the scene. The choice is impressive, from seedy to Shanghai Chic, the city beckons!
