South Korea is a presidential republic consisting of 16 administrative divisions, and is a developed country with a high standard of living. It has the fourth
largest economy in Asia and the 10th largest in the world. The economy is export-driven, with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships,
machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. South Korea is a member of the United Nations, WTO, OECD and G-20 major economies. It is also a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit.
The pace of development is astounding, and South Korea is pursuing a large number of multi-billion dollar developments, most notably the Digital Media City in Seoul, Centum City in Busan and Songdo International City in Incheon. The 133-floor supertall Digital Media City Landmark Building is slated to become the world's second tallest building in 2015, housing the world's tallest observatory and hotels, while the 151-floor supertall 151 Incheon Tower will become the world's tallest twin towers in 2014. Centum City is home to the world's largest department store, the Shinsegae Centum City, which set a new Guinness World Record in 2009.
The new Hermann Tilke designed International Circuit is being constructed in the South West, in the coastal province of South Jeolla, in Yeongam County, and its inaugural grand prix in 2010 will be held between the Japanese and Brazil Grands Prix. Organisers say the main circuit will include Asia's longest straight of 1.2km which will allow speeds of up to 320km per hour. A separate, 3km circuit will be used for domestic events.
