What a weekend for British Sport. This weekend we have had everything from the sublime to the ridiculous. Once again our fantastic cyclists, led by Sir Chris Hoy are back leading the world. Eight medals from the World Cup event held at the new Olympic Velodrome is a wonderful achievement. Come the Olympics, only one cyclist from each country will be able to compete in each event. This rule didn’t apply for this meeting and doesn’t for the World Championship to be held in Melbourne in March. This meant that because, everyone wanted to test out the track and the facilities, all the best cyclists were in attendance. For instance Germans finished 2nd and 3rd in the Men’s sprint event. This can’t happen in the Olympics and it should, therefore, be slightly easier to win medals at our Olympics. Add in the medal prospects of our road racers and add in our prowess at the speciality bike events, things are looking very good for London. That’s the sublime, the ridiculous is easy. The sight of two so-called British Heavyweights brawling at a press conference after the Klitschko - Chisora fight must rank as one of the most unedifying spectacles ever seen in sport. Chisora is an appalling person; he has already bitten an opponent, he slaps Klitschko in the face at the weigh-in, he spits in Klitschko’s brothers face at the start of the fight and then threatens to shoot David Haye during their verbals after the fight. Haye has previous; he is a pumped-up light-heavyweight who won his world title by beating a man-mountain who couldn’t punch and could only move in one direction. When it came to his turn to fight Vitali Klitschko for the title he turned turtle and ran for 12 rounds and then had the temerity to blame his defeat on a damaged toe; damaged heart more likely. There is speculation that this was all stage managed so that the two “men” could sort out their problems in the ring. The British Board of Control should ensure that this doesn’t happen. Haye relinquished his licence after the Klitschko defeat; the Board should resist any attempt from Haye for re-instatement his license and it should strip Chisora of his license forthwith and tell him if he wishes to carry on fighting to go and fight elsewhere. 20th February 2012
