Cardiff Trip & Skiing with John Hampden School by Emily May Sanders

(April 2011)

April so far has been a very busy month for Winning Tours. At the beginning of the month I escorted a number PE teachers and rugby coaches to Cardiff to show them all what accommodation and activities are on offer for groups within the city. The weekend was jointly organised and funded by the Cardiff Tourist Board, Cardiff and Co.

A great time was had by all, and they were all impressed by what Cardiff had to offer – we were lucky enough to take part in some white water rafting at the new Cardiff International White Water Centre, an open top bus tour, a Millennium Stadium tour and some time at The Museum of Welsh Life - St Fagan’s Folk Museum.

By popular request I brought back Welsh Cakes for everyone in the office!!

In between looking after groups I managed some time in the office for some Eventforce training – we are in the process of adapting to a new ‘all singing and dancing’ system called Eventforce. Once I have mastered the skills to use it to its capacity it will be a brilliant tool to help organise some of my larger groups, such as the UK Scouts. I had better get practising as IT is not really my forte!

John Hampden School hit the slopes at the beginning of the Easter holidays; I headed off to Les Deux Alpes in France for a week with 31 pupils and 3 teachers. It was great to get out of the country for a bit, even though I had work to do.

The views from the top of the mountain were beautiful and it was surprisingly warm down in the resort. It was great having time to talk to the pupils about what they enjoy on school trips, take part in their pool tournaments and even take a gamble in their mini casino.

A big thank you to my ‘Dobbie’ who looked after me very well, it did take a few days to get used to being called ‘Ma’am’ (I thought it was only members of the royal family that were addressed like that!)

I suppose a Ski trip would not be complete without a few trips to the hospital with injuries, one pupil even had the pleasure of being airlifted off the mountain in a helicopter, a bit excessive when he only needed a few  stitches.

It was my responsibility to help keep the injured pupils entertained back in the resort whilst everyone else was on the slopes. We enjoyed our regular stroll downtown to the local Creperie!! I don’t think I did my waistline any favours that week…. Oh well, nothing a few session in the gym won’t fix!!
